kismet spontaneously emerged in early 1997 from late-night, covert meetings between numerous well-known co-conspirators in chapel hill's thriving band scene: mark simonsen (vibes), john randall pelosi (tenor, guitar), ted zarrus (drums), matthew levy (guitar), billy miller (flute, soprano), daryl white (upright bass), chris eubank (cello), stacy guess (trumpet), dan stern (tenor), stu cole (upright bass) and clark gibson (upright bass). kismet members have also been involved with the squirrel nut zippers, family dollar pharaohs, shek ala shek, chicken wire gang, spatula, shark quest, bicentennial quarters, strung out and beaten, pressure boys, anubis leisure society orchestra, good neighbors and sex police. live performances have added turntables, vocals and power tools to an already unpredictable mix.

employing progressive composition techniques and improvisation to create a new sound, sometimes explosive and sometimes sweet, with both spiky and ambient moments, kismet's music has been compared to that of miles davis, the jazz passengers, sun ra, king crimson and the lounge lizards.
