Independent Study
With the permission of a supervising member of the art history faculty, students may register for
ART 396 (Directed Readings in Art History) for 3 semester hours. With further permission, students may pursue more than one course of independent study.
Foreign Languages
Art History majors are strongly encouraged to study languages beyond the University requirement. Students planning to study Art History at the graduate level should be aware that virtually all graduate programs in Art History require an advanced reading knowledge of French and German, as well as any other languages necessary for the student's area of specialization.
Transfer Students
The University accepts six semester hours in Art from students transferring from other institutions. Students interested in obtaining additional transfer credits must meet with the Undergraduate Advisor for Art History. A minimum of 18 credit hours in Art History at UNC-Chapel Hill (or through a study-abroad program sponsored by UNC- Chapel Hill) is required for the BA in Art History.
Courses Overseas
With department approval, students can earn credit for a maximum of two courses taken abroad through non-UNC-Chapel Hill programs. Thus, students are strongly encouraged to seek course approval before traveling overseas with a non-UNC program. Students who take such trips are also encouraged to save all of their written work to submit to the Undergraduate Advisor for Art History for credit approval.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate with a BA in Art H istory, students must have a "C" average (2.0) on all work taken in the University and 18 semester hours of work with the grade of "C" or better in art history. For further information regarding this requirement, students should contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies for Art History and their College of Arts and Sciences/General College Advisor in Steele Building. Only the College of Arts and Sciences/General College Advisor will determine whether an individual student has met the overall requirements for graduation.
Internships
Students are encouraged to pursue internships at local, regional, or national arts institutions. Information about many internship opportunities is available in the department office. To receive course credit for an internship, students must arrange a directed study course (
ART 396) with an Art History faculty member in advance.
