"Art and Nature Past and Present"

Call for Papers

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the North Carolina Museum of Art invite proposals from graduate students in art studio or art history for the first annual graduate student symposium to be held November 6, 2004 at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC.  This year's topic is "ART AND NATURE PAST AND PRESENT.”  The symposium will focus broadly on how the relation between art and nature has been conceptualized and represented in the visual arts. Papers can address past or present theories, practices, images, materials or technologies. They can take up questions of art and nature in relation to other cultural practices, social movements, political issues, or histories. They might consider how varied conceptions of "Art" and "Nature" have developed in relation to one another.  Papers that consider aspects of the history of technology or the history of science in relation to visualizing nature are also welcome.  Studio artists may wish to incorporate their own works into the discussion.  To apply, please send a one- to two-page abstract for a 20-minute presentation and your cv to: Graduate Student Symposium, North Carolina Museum of Art, 4630 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-4630. For further information call (919) 839-6262, ext. 2145, or e-mail cdopko@ncmamail.dcr.state.nc.us.  Deadline: September 3, 2004.
